South African Sailing Courses

The SAS Skippers Ticket allows you to operate vessels over 9 meters in length and with engines exceeding 15HP. This certification applies to both sailboats and power-driven vessels and is recognized internationally. It is the only accreditation accepted by South African port authorities for sailing within the country.

To get started, determine which SAS Skippers Ticket aligns with your experience and meets the course prerequisites. It is generally recommended to follow the progression through these levels:

  • SAS Competent Crew
  • SAS Day Skipper
  • SAS Coastal Skipper
  • SAS Yachtmaster

Each SAS course includes an online theory component.

Begin by purchasing and completing the online theory course to prepare for the SAS theory exam. Exams are conducted at designated SAS centers or approved offices in your area. Once you pass the theory exam, you can enroll in practical sailing training aboard an accredited vessel to prepare for the practical and oral assessments, which are conducted at the end of the practical training.

Upon successfully completing the theory, practical, and oral examinations and meeting all required prerequisites, candidates will be awarded a SAS Certificate of Competence (CoC).
